Window air conditioners are a great affordable alternative to central air systems. However, these devices require regular maintenance to ensure they can sufficiently cool rooms in your home. Here are a few tips to keep your window AC in good condition this summer.
Clean the Air Filter
Air filters trap dust, pollen, and other substances to prevent them from getting inside your home. In general, you should check and clean the filter at least once per month. If you’re running the air conditioner frequently, check the filter every one to two weeks.
Check the Coil for Debris
You should clean the condenser coils (which are situated outside the home) at least once per year, preferably before you install the device in summer. However, it doesn’t hurt to check the coil on occasion to ensure they’re clean. If you see dust and debris, power off the unit and clean the coils before turning it back on.
Sanitized the Drain Pan
Drain pans can harbor mold if water is left to linger inside. Along with emptying the pan as needed, washing and sanitizing it can deter future mold growth. Hot water, soap, and vinegar are all you need to sanitize the drain pan (which should take place once a month or so).
Check the Positioning of the Unit
Window units perform best when they’re slanted downward outside the window. This helps water drain from the device, which deters the growth of mold and mildew. Also, make sure the AC unit isn’t depositing water onto the side of your home.
